Rahu and Ketu Transit: Understanding Their Effect on Your Life

Rahu and Ketu occupy an unusual place in Vedic astrology. They are not physical planets but mathematical points — the two nodes where the Moon’s orbit intersects the ecliptic. Yet in practice, few factors shape a person’s experience of a period as distinctly as the nodal transit. Understanding how they work removes a great deal of unnecessary confusion.

What Rahu and Ketu Represent

Classical tradition treats the nodes as a single severed entity: Rahu the head, Ketu the body. They always sit exactly opposite each other in the chart, one hundred and eighty degrees apart, and they move in reverse through the zodiac.

Rahu is associated with desire, amplification, foreign influence, unconventional paths, ambition and obsession. Wherever Rahu sits, appetite increases. It tends to expand the affairs of its house — sometimes productively, sometimes past the point of balance.

Ketu is associated with detachment, dissolution, past accumulation, spirituality and sudden withdrawal. Wherever Ketu sits, attachment tends to loosen. It is traditionally linked to mastery carried forward and to the areas of life a person is inclined to renounce rather than pursue.

The Rhythm of the Nodal Transit

Rahu and Ketu take approximately eighteen months to move through one sign, completing a full circuit of the zodiac in roughly eighteen years. Because they move in reverse, they travel backwards through the signs rather than forward.

This eighteen-month rhythm is why nodal transits are felt as distinct chapters. A house activated by Rahu stays activated for a year and a half, which is long enough for a genuine shift in circumstances to unfold rather than a passing mood.

How the Transit Is Actually Read

The meaningful question is not simply “where is Rahu now” but “which houses are the nodes activating in your chart”. Because the nodes are always opposite, a transit always works on a pair of houses at once — one expanded by Rahu, the other loosened by Ketu.

The axis matters more than the individual placement. A transit across the tenth and fourth houses draws attention toward career while home life recedes. A transit across the first and seventh houses shifts the balance between self and partnership. A transit across the second and eighth turns attention toward resources, family wealth and matters of transformation.

Rahu’s Characteristic Effect

During a Rahu transit, the affairs of the house it occupies tend to intensify. Opportunities in that area often arrive suddenly and from unexpected directions. Foreign connections, unconventional routes and rapid developments are traditionally associated with Rahu’s influence.

The caution is equally traditional. Rahu amplifies without discriminating. It can inflate ambition past what circumstances support, and it is associated with situations that appear more substantial than they turn out to be. Periods of Rahu emphasis reward careful verification — of people, of offers, of anything that seems unusually easy.

Ketu’s Characteristic Effect

Ketu’s influence is quieter and often recognised only in hindsight. Interest in the affairs of its house tends to fade. Things once considered important may simply stop holding attention. Classical tradition associates Ketu with spiritual inclination, research, solitude and the letting go of what has been outgrown.

Because Ketu dissolves rather than builds, its transit frequently coincides with endings that feel oddly undramatic — a relationship that quietly concludes, an ambition abandoned without regret, a routine that falls away.

Why the Same Transit Affects People Differently

Two people experiencing the same nodal transit can have entirely unrelated experiences, and the reasons sit in the individual chart.

The houses the nodes activate depend on your lagna, so the same sign placement lands on completely different areas of life for different charts. The natal position of Rahu and Ketu matters — a transit reinforcing the natal placement carries more weight. The running mahadasha and antardasha either bring the nodes into prominence or leave them in the background. Aspects from Guru and Shani during the transit temper or sharpen it considerably.

This is why general predictions organised by sign are of limited use for nodal transits specifically.

Nodal Transit and Eclipses

Eclipses occur when the Sun and Moon align near the nodal axis, which is why the nodes are traditionally connected to eclipse phenomena. In classical practice, eclipses falling on sensitive points in a chart are given attention, and the period around them is generally considered unsuitable for beginning important undertakings.

The traditional advice during eclipses is restraint rather than alarm — avoiding major initiations, keeping to quiet practice, and resuming normal activity afterwards.

Traditional Supports During Nodal Periods

Classical practice offers several supports for difficult nodal transits. Recitation of nodal mantras is the most commonly mentioned. Charity associated with each node — traditionally items such as sesame, blankets or dark grains for Rahu, and offerings connected with renunciation for Ketu — is part of established practice. Regularity of routine is particularly emphasised, since the nodes are associated with disorientation and steady structure counteracts it. Ganesha worship is traditionally recommended for Ketu, and Durga worship for Rahu.

The standard caution applies. Nodal transits attract more commercial remedy-selling than almost any other area of astrology, precisely because Rahu and Ketu sound frightening to people unfamiliar with them. Genuine supports do not require large payments.

A Practical Way to Think About It

Rahu and Ketu are not malefics in the ordinary sense. They redirect attention. Rahu pulls you toward something with unusual force; Ketu withdraws you from something with unusual ease. The skill lies in recognising which is happening and responding deliberately rather than being carried.

Periods of nodal emphasis tend to be the ones people later identify as turning points — not because something was inflicted on them, but because their direction genuinely changed.

Reading Your Own Nodal Transit

Since the effect depends on which houses the nodes activate in your specific chart, general guidance only goes so far. At Occult Bhagvat, Astro P K Bhattacharjee examines the natal position of the nodes, the houses currently activated, and the running dasha before assessing what the transit is likely to bring forward.
