Ketu Mahadasha runs for 7 years — the shortest period in the Vimshottari system. It is also the least understood. Where Rahu’s 18 years add, accelerate and magnify, Ketu’s 7 years tend to do the opposite: they strip away.
People often describe this period as the time when things they had held onto for years simply stopped mattering. That is not a malfunction. It is what Ketu does.
What Ketu Does in a Dasha
Ketu is the south node of the Moon — the point opposite Rahu where the Moon’s orbit crosses the ecliptic. In classical tradition it is the headless body of the demon Swarabhanu. Rahu kept the head and all the appetite; Ketu kept the body and none of it.
A body without a head cannot want anything. It cannot calculate advantage or ask what is in this for me. So during Ketu’s dasha, desire quietly drains out of whatever house Ketu occupies.
Common experiences during these 7 years:
- Loss of interest in something that previously felt central — a career, a goal, a social circle
- Detachment that arrives without a decision being made
- Sudden endings — relationships, jobs or arrangements that close cleanly rather than slowly
- Turning inward — meditation, study, solitude, spiritual practice
- Sharp intuition — answers arriving before the reasoning does
- Reduced social appetite — fewer people, less noise, less interest in being seen
- Research ability — unusual capacity to go deep into one subject
Note what is not on that list: disaster. Ketu’s reputation for loss comes from people experiencing detachment and interpreting it as something being taken from them. Often what ends during a Ketu period had already finished being useful.
Why 7 Years Can Feel Longer
Ketu’s dasha is the shortest, but people frequently report it as the slowest. The reason is that Ketu removes motivation rather than circumstances. External life may look unchanged while the internal drive behind it quietly disappears.
This is particularly disorienting for people who came into the period from a Mars or Rahu dasha, where push and ambition were the normal state. The contrast makes the Ketu years feel flat rather than peaceful, at least initially.
The period is generally more comfortable for people whose lives already have a contemplative or research-based element, and harder for those whose identity rests on visible achievement.
What Decides How Ketu’s 7 Years Go
As with any dasha, the result depends on Ketu’s position in your specific chart rather than on Ketu in the abstract.
Which house Ketu occupies. Ketu in the 3rd, 6th, 11th or 12th is traditionally considered more workable — Ketu dissolves difficulties in the house it sits in, which is genuinely useful in the 6th house of enemies and obstacles, and suits the 12th house of release. Ketu in the 1st, 4th or 7th tends to be felt more personally.
The dispositor. Like Rahu, Ketu owns no sign in the usual sense and delivers much of its result through the lord of the sign it occupies. A strong, well-placed dispositor usually makes the period considerably easier.
Conjunctions. Ketu with Jupiter, the Moon or Mars each produce distinct patterns. Ketu with the Moon in particular tends to affect emotional steadiness and is worth understanding properly rather than fearing.
The antardasha sequence. Seven years contains nine sub-periods, several of them only a few months long. Ketu-Venus feels quite different from Ketu-Saturn. The sub-period usually explains the specific event; the mahadasha only sets the mood.
Ketu Mahadasha and the Nodal Axis
Ketu always sits exactly opposite Rahu, and during Ketu’s dasha the whole Rahu-Ketu axis becomes active — just from the other end.
Ketu’s house is where you already have competence, often described in tradition as carried from previous lives. During its dasha, that competence stops producing growth. The pull is towards releasing it rather than leaning on it. Meanwhile Rahu’s house, opposite, is where the next chapter is waiting.

Traditional Remedies for Ketu Mahadasha
Tradition prescribes practices that work with Ketu’s nature rather than against it:
- Worship of Lord Ganesha, the deity classically associated with Ketu
- The Ketu beeja mantra — Om Straam Streem Straum Sah Ketave Namah
- Recitation of the Ganesha Atharvashirsha, or simple daily Ganapati worship
- Feeding dogs, particularly on Tuesdays
- Donating blankets, sesame seeds or multi-coloured cloth
- Regular meditation and deliberate periods of silence
- A small, consistent spiritual practice rather than an intense but irregular one
Cat’s eye (lehsunia) is the gemstone associated with Ketu. It should never be worn on general advice — it requires a full chart analysis, because it intensifies whatever Ketu is already doing.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long is Ketu Mahadasha?
7 years — the shortest of the nine periods in the Vimshottari system, tied with Mars.
Is Ketu Mahadasha bad for career?
Not necessarily, but it often changes what you want from a career. Many people switch direction during this period, or move into research, teaching, healing or behind-the-scenes work. Loss of ambition for one path is not the same as loss of capability.
Which dasha comes after Ketu?
Venus (Shukra) Mahadasha, which runs 20 years — the longest in the system. The shift from Ketu to Venus is one of the sharpest contrasts in the whole sequence.
What comes before Ketu Mahadasha?
Mercury (Budh) Mahadasha, which runs 17 years.
Is Ketu Mahadasha good for spiritual practice?
It is traditionally considered the most supportive period for it. Ketu is the moksha karaka, the significator of liberation, and meditation or study tends to come more naturally during these years than at other times.
Does Ketu Mahadasha affect marriage?
It can introduce emotional distance, particularly where Ketu affects the 7th house or Venus. Whether that is significant depends on the rest of the chart. This is an area where a general rule is especially unreliable.
Seven Years of Clearing Out
Ketu does not punish. It filters. The things that fall away during these seven years are usually the things that had already stopped giving anything back — and the discomfort comes less from losing them than from not yet knowing what replaces them.
Understanding where your Ketu sits, and which sub-period you are currently in, is what turns a vague flat stretch into something you can actually work with.
