27 Nakshatras: Complete Guide to the Lunar Mansions

The 27 nakshatras are the lunar mansions of Vedic astrology — the 27 segments the zodiac is divided into, each spanning 13 degrees and 20 minutes. Your birth nakshatra is the one the Moon occupied at the moment you were born.

Most people know their rashi (Moon sign). Far fewer know their nakshatra, even though in traditional practice it carries more weight for personality, compatibility and timing.

Nakshatra vs Rashi: Why Nakshatra Is More Precise

The zodiac can be divided two ways. Into 12 rashis of 30 degrees each, or into 27 nakshatras of 13°20′ each.

Because the nakshatra divisions are smaller, they are more specific. Two people born three days apart can share the same Moon sign but have different nakshatras — and in practice they often read quite differently.

The nakshatra also does something the rashi cannot: it determines your Vimshottari Dasha sequence. Each nakshatra is ruled by one of nine planets, and whichever nakshatra your Moon occupied decides which planetary period your life begins with and the order of everything after. This alone makes it the single most consequential point in the chart for timing.

The 27 Nakshatras and Their Ruling Planets

Each nakshatra has a ruling planet, a symbol and a presiding deity. The planetary rulership repeats in a fixed cycle of nine, three times over.

  1. Ashwini — Ketu — horse’s head — swift, healing, pioneering
  2. Bharani — Venus — yoni — intensity, endurance, transformation
  3. Krittika — Sun — blade or flame — sharp, cutting, purifying
  4. Rohini — Moon — cart or chariot — growth, beauty, fertility
  5. Mrigashira — Mars — deer’s head — searching, curious, restless
  6. Ardra — Rahu — teardrop — storm, upheaval, breakthrough
  7. Punarvasu — Jupiter — quiver of arrows — renewal, return, restoration
  8. Pushya — Saturn — cow’s udder — nourishment, care, stability
  9. Ashlesha — Mercury — coiled serpent — insight, strategy, depth
  10. Magha — Ketu — throne — ancestry, authority, legacy
  11. Purva Phalguni — Venus — hammock — pleasure, rest, creativity
  12. Uttara Phalguni — Sun — bed — partnership, contracts, support
  13. Hasta — Moon — hand — skill, craft, dexterity
  14. Chitra — Mars — pearl — design, beauty, precision
  15. Swati — Rahu — young shoot in wind — independence, flexibility, trade
  16. Vishakha — Jupiter — archway — goal-focus, determination, ambition
  17. Anuradha — Saturn — lotus — friendship, devotion, cooperation
  18. Jyeshtha — Mercury — earring — seniority, protection, responsibility
  19. Mula — Ketu — bundle of roots — investigation, uprooting, getting to the base
  20. Purva Ashadha — Venus — fan — invigoration, persuasion, confidence
  21. Uttara Ashadha — Sun — elephant tusk — lasting victory, integrity
  22. Shravana — Moon — ear — listening, learning, tradition
  23. Dhanishta — Mars — drum — rhythm, wealth, performance
  24. Shatabhisha — Rahu — empty circle — healing, secrecy, research
  25. Purva Bhadrapada — Jupiter — front of a funeral cot — intensity, idealism
  26. Uttara Bhadrapada — Saturn — back of a funeral cot — depth, wisdom, calm
  27. Revati — Mercury — fish — completion, protection, gentleness

The keywords above are indicative, not definitive. A nakshatra’s actual expression in a chart depends on which planets occupy it, which house it falls in, and the condition of its ruling planet.

Padas: The Four Quarters

Each nakshatra is divided into four padas of 3°20′ each, giving 108 padas across the zodiac. Each pada corresponds to a sign in the Navamsa (D9) chart.

This matters because two people in the same nakshatra but different padas can differ considerably. The pada refines the reading — and it is also why precise birth time is necessary. The Moon crosses one pada in roughly six hours.

Where Nakshatras Are Actually Used

Dasha calculation. The Moon’s nakshatra sets your entire Vimshottari sequence. This is the most important practical use.

Kundli matching. The Ashtakoot (Gun Milan) system is built almost entirely on nakshatras. Nadi, Bhakoot, Gana, Yoni, Tara and Graha Maitri all derive from the birth nakshatras of the two people. Our guide on kundli matching and Gun Milan explains how.

Muhurat. Choosing an auspicious time for a wedding, a business start or a housewarming depends heavily on the nakshatra running that day.

Naming. Traditionally the first syllable of a child’s name is chosen according to the birth nakshatra pada.

Personality reading. Nakshatra gives a finer description than Moon sign alone.

Gandanta and Other Sensitive Points

Certain junctions between nakshatras are traditionally treated with extra care. Gandanta points occur where a water sign meets a fire sign — the junctions of Revati–Ashwini, Ashlesha–Magha and Jyeshtha–Mula.

A Moon placed very close to these junctions is considered sensitive in classical texts, and traditional remedies exist for it. It is worth noting that this is one of the areas where general reading online tends to be alarmist. The condition of the chart as a whole decides how much weight it actually carries.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find my nakshatra?

Any Vedic kundli calculated from your date, exact time and place of birth will show your Moon’s nakshatra and pada. It cannot be worked out from your date of birth alone.

Which is more important, nakshatra or rashi?

Nakshatra is more precise and has more practical uses — it determines your dasha sequence and drives kundli matching. Rashi remains useful as a broader indicator. In traditional practice they are read together, not against each other.

How many nakshatras are there — 27 or 28?

Twenty-seven are used in standard practice. A twenty-eighth, Abhijit, appears in some classical texts and is used for certain muhurat calculations, but it is not part of the normal 27-fold division.

Can two people have the same nakshatra?

Yes, and it is common — the Moon spends roughly a day in each nakshatra. The pada, the rest of the chart and the birth time distinguish them.

Is any nakshatra unlucky?

No nakshatra is inherently unlucky. Some — Ardra, Ashlesha, Mula, Jyeshtha — have intense reputations, but intensity is not misfortune, and several of them are associated with exceptional depth and capability. How a nakshatra expresses depends on the planets in it and the chart around it.

Does nakshatra matter for marriage matching?

Yes — it is the foundation of the entire Gun Milan system. The 36-point score is calculated from the birth nakshatras of both people.

The Layer Most People Skip

Reading a chart by Moon sign alone is like reading an address by city alone. The nakshatra narrows it considerably, and the pada narrows it further. Given that your nakshatra also sets the entire timeline of your dashas, it is arguably the single most useful thing to know about your own chart after your ascendant.
